Pet Charities - Our Favorites

For many pet owners and lovers, helping animals is a cause that is near and dear to their hearts. However, countless people don’t know exactly how to get started or what to look for in a charitable organization that reflects their own beliefs.
Finding a good animal charity to donate to takes time and research, so it’s important that you thoroughly examine cause.

Angel's Gate (www.angelsgate.org) A residential, non-profit, 501 (C) 3 home, our home, for special needs animals. Here, animals many of whom are terminally and / or critically ill or physically challenged, come to live out their days in peace, dignity and love. Our focus is on wellness and quality of life. We provide for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each animal. We take a holistic approach in animal care, giving all needed supportive services including hospice care.
Best Friends Animal Society (www.bestfriends.org) They are guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign created a new vision: A grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable" into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. Since then, the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen to approximately 5 million a year. There has been much progress, but there is still much more to do.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (www.aspca.org) A terrific resource for families and pet care providers, making it easy to help via donation, shopping, lobbying for animals, or adopting. Their adoption database makes it easy for users to find local shelters.
The Humane Society of the United States (www.hsus.org) They work to protect pets, wildlife, farm animals, or animals. They conduct research on the evils of cruelty, exploitation, and neglect and they are particularly active in animal activism and legislation to protect animals.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (www.peta.org) A non-profit interest group whose goal is to end all animal exploitation—they’re also the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA aims to end animal suffering world-wide through public education, research, rescue, legislation, cruelty investigations, special events, and celebrity involvement and protest campaigns.
North Shore Animal League America (www.nsalamerica.org) They are the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world, housing an average of 300 animals at any given time. To date, the Animal League has found homes for almost one million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. However, this exciting achievement did not happen overnight. The road was long and the efforts great. Many dedicated individuals shared their passion and perseverance in making North Shore Animal League America what it is today.
World Wildlife Federation (www.worldwildlife.org) A nature conservation organization that works to protect natural areas and wild populations of plants and animals in addition to other environmental initiatives. Users can support the WWF by direct donation, adopting an animal, shopping, or participating in their Conservation Action Network.
Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans (www.neads.org) A Massachusetts-based organization that trains dogs to help the deaf or physically disabled. Users can make a donation, become a volunteer, or adopt a dog through NEADS.
Petfinder (www.petfinder.com) They offer both a searchable database to find a pet and a directory of shelters and adoption organizations across the US, Canada, and Mexico. The pet database currently includes over 250,000 pets from over 11,000 adoption groups. The directory includes over 10,000 animal shelters and organizations.
PetSmart Charities (www.petsmartcharities.org) They have a mission to improve the quality of life for all companion animals by creating and supporting programs that save the lives of homeless pets and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. Through our programs and our valued partnerships, we help save a pet's life every minute.
Delta Society (www.deltasociety.org) They provide training across the country for people who want to volunteer with their pet to bring "pet therapy" to hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools, and other facilities.
Search Dog Foundation (www.searchdogfoundation.org) They train dogs recruited from shelters and breed rescue groups to be part of disaster search teams assembled in the wake of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and terrorism such as the World Trade Center attacks.
National Association for Search and Rescue (www.nasar.org) They work to advance knowledge in fields related to search and rescue. Their Dog Fact Sheet offers useful information for people who want to volunteer on SAR teams or train their animals to become SAR dogs.
4 Paws for Ability (www.4pawsforability.org) They train and place service dogs to assist people with disabilities, particularly for children in need. Users can help by making a donation, or by sponsoring or providing foster care for a dog.
Animal Charities of America (www.animalcharitiesofamerica.org) A nonprofit organization that provides detailed information on pre-screened, high quality animal-related charities. Their directory currently includes 65 charities.
Friends of Animals (www.friendsofanimals.org) A non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, incorporated in the state of New York since 1957. Friends of Animals works to cultivate a respectful view of nonhuman animals, free-living and domestic. Our goal is to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world.
Hearts United for Animals (www.hua.org) A national no-kill animal shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. We rescue dogs from all over the country and specialize in long distance adoptions. We take the creatures who are lost, afraid, hungry or ill and comfort them, give them a warm, soft bed, good food, medical care and most of all, love.
The Elephant Sanctuary (www.elephants.com) The Sanctuary, in Tennessee, founded in 1995, is a 501 non-profit organization and is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee — 85 miles southwest of Nashville. A natural refuge where sick, old and needy elephants can once again walk the earth in peace and dignity.

Their animal category currently includes nearly 400 charities.
